Okay, I wasn’t going to post things all the time here, but this is worth a quick highlight.
Peng Shuai is a top women’s tennis player. She’s top 20 in the world and a recent grand slam winner, who recently accused a powerful Chinese Communist Party (CCP) member of sexually assaulting her.
As a result, the CCP did what it does best: quickly censor the post and then disappear Peng Shuai. As in, she hasn’t been seen in public since. Still, the CCP continues to try to cover this up and censor it, even blatantly doctoring an e-mail from Peng Shuai denying the claims.
BUT, the Women’s Tennis Association and many players (men and women) are holding the line and demanding accountability from China, even at risk of losing hundreds of millions of dollars due to retaliation.
For anyone with even a cursory awareness of what the CCP does, this shouldn’t be surprising. But moments like this are critical in either teaching the CCP that it can get away with heinous acts of censorship and violence, or teaching them that they cannot.
With the 2022 Winter Olympics in China coming up in 3 months, it is worth watching what happens here. While I doubt that the U.S. would pull out of the games entirely, it would be great if an American or worldwide contingent worked together to ensure that these would be the least-viewed Olympics in history.
